In designing a kitchen, you might not think of hardware for your cabinets and drawers, but it’s a detail that can really impact your kitchen’s look. The right set of knobs or pulls can be the perfect accessory to bring a design together, just like the right pair of earrings or a colorful scarf can jazz up a simple black dress for any occasion.
Since a kitchen might have anywhere from 10 to 40 knobs or pulls on cabinets and drawers, they’re an important aspect of any design. We can suggest a few guidelines to keep in mind as you make your final decision:
- Take inventory: Look around your kitchen (or the plans if you’re still in the designing stages.) Make a note of the number of cabinets and drawers so you can be sure to buy enough hardware.
- Knobs or pulls?: You’ll need to decide whether you want to use all knobs, all pulls, or both. Generally speaking, knobs are used for drawers and pulls for cabinets; however, if you’re going to combine them, it’s important to choose styles that will go well together and not clash or look too busy.
- What’s your style?: This is where your creativity comes in. Different types of hardware can make the same cabinet style seem either modern or vintage. Explore both traditional and contemporary designs. We suggest creating a pinboard on Pinterest to save examples of styles you like to help you make your decision.
- Practical matters: Whatever style of hardware you choose, the most important consideration is whether it feels right in your hand and opens the cabinet or drawer easily; an ornamental knob that is difficult to grasp or doesn’t fit well in your hand isn’t a good choice regardless of design.
When you’re ready to see some styles in person, we invite you to come into our showroom and browse on your own–or make an appointment to get truly personalized service. Bring a sample of your finishes so you can get an idea of how the hardware will complement it. In addition, you should plan to buy samples of hardware you like in order to take it home and try it out in your own space. We’ll be glad to help you every step of the way.
